Google Shopping introduces free product listings

Google has announced that it will make it free for merchants to sell on the Google Shopping platform in the US. Since w/c 27 April 2020 in the US only, search results on the Google Shopping tab have consisted primarily of free product listings regardless of whether brands advertise on Google. This will eventually roll out globally before the end of the year.

Paid product listing ads now appear alongside free listings within the Google Shopping tab. This change allows merchants to show their offers on the Shopping tab without charge, although this does not affect Google Shopping Ads served via Google Search Paid product listing ads, which will continue to appear in ad slots and will operate in the same way as Shopping Ads do today. It will continue to evolve throughout the year in the Shopping tab and in this POV we look at the update in more detail, including eligibility, reporting and what the change means for brands.
