In 2011 we have seen a huge shift to the concept of content curation. Today, more brands are embracing the idea that brands are becoming the media and a new discipline widely referred to, as content marketing is becoming the norm. This is making executives happy, as the line item on their budget is moving in-house. However staffing these positions will not be the same.

Social media has generally been absorbed by departments such as marketing or communications, and in some cases even within the public relations field. However today’s brand will require a new type of employee, one with more and varied skills.

Editorial skills, such as writing blogs, white papers and slide presentations will become a necessary asset. As well those who can conceptualize and even edit video will be more valuable. No longer will this job be handed over to the person most willing to do it, but social media roles may even be more likely to go to a person who fits the customer demographic.

While this likely won’t happen overnight, nor will it be true in every scenario, however it stands to reason that brands who are selling feminine hygiene products will be more inclined to hire content marketers that are familiar with and/or, using such products.

Content marketing is not a new idea. Nor is it that far off from what many social media, slash marketers, slash PR professionals, slash communications person, slash ‘I’m getting hat head from all these hats’ person has been doing to date.

The difference is that the corporate, or less socially savvy suits upstairs are now seeing the impact that content has on SEO, lead generation, customer relationship management and more. As a result, budgets are beginning to loosen when social media comes to the table.
